Weird world of ‘weed’ dating

Speed dating maybe OK for city types with no time on their hands, but in rural communities where bars, restaurants or, indeed, people are at a premium, the concept hasn’t exactly caught on.

Luckily, help is at hand for all you single farmers out there. It’s called ‘weed dating’, and is the brainchild of Jean and Wendy Palthey, farmers from Vermont, USA.

Weeding takes place on farms among rows of crops. Participants weed a row with a potential romantic interest, before moving on to another row and another partner. With all the fresh air and close contact with the earth, the conditions couldn’t be righter for the shoots of love to sprout.

Participant Josh Schlossberg, 31, said: ‘It's better to meet people over shared interests and physically doing something. I've done online dating, but this is the first time I've done something like this where you meet multiple people.’

So far there have been three weed-dating events, two in August and one in September. Another is due to take place later this month. Participants pay $10 for the privilege of meeting and weeding.
