Use (password) protection

It's the gate-way to all things possible. The invention of the wi-fi router has meant that an entire house of people can share one internet connection from absolutely any location: lounge, kitchen even...ahem, bathroom. But modern internet technology can make users more vulnerable than has been previously thought.

Take for example the recent case of a resident of Buffalo, New York who gave up in frustration at attempting to set up a secure password for his new wi-fi router, the Smoking Jacket tells us. Not only was his connection open to half the neigbourhood to use for their every online whim and desire but his internet history was lying wide open to being filled up with data about all sorts of unsavoury e-information:

'The realization that leaving his router unprotected was a horrible idea finally dawned on the New York resident as [federal] agents stood over him shouting the word 'paedophile' and informing him that he downloaded thousands of child porn images at 11:30pm the previous night.'

'He was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, but only after agents seized his laptop and every iPhone and iPad in the house to scour it for evidence of kiddie porn.'

We're trying to educate our parents about the benefits of protecting their internet connections but we're afraid they're still using the CD disk drive to hold their cups of tea...
