The planet's porn performance

As we come towards the close of another year, many Brits are expecting another 'annus horribilis' speech by the Queen on Christmas Day: student riots and the recession all contributing to a general sense of how crap 2010 has been. Except that we have had one thing in common that we have all been turning towards for comfort and relief: pornography. Or, to be more specific, internet porn.

Latest statistics from major news organisations around the world report that almost half of all people who use the internet view pornographic material, with ten percent of those people admitting to being addicted to it. It makes for surprising, if not slightly worrying reading, from Asylum online:

'43% of all internet users view pornographic material: 1 out of 3 are female. The United States spends $13.6 billion on porn [compared to] the UK's $1.94 billion.'

However, with 15 new sexually-transmitted diseases diagnosed among porn actors and actresses each week, we're alot safer behind our (mucky) computer screens.
