Sri Lanka porn crackdown

Over a hundred people have been outed as ‘pornographers’ in Sri Lanka, with nearly dozens of faces of people accused of appearing in porn films published by the Sri Lankan media, working in conjunction with police.

Anti-obscenity laws in Sri Lanka are mighty strict, with authorities believing pornography leads to rape. Reports say that the alleged porn actors could be fined and sentenced to six months in prison.

Photos of 80 women and three men have been released for publication. One daily newspaper published 27 faces on Tuesday. They appeared along with a police notice asking the public to help trace those pictured.

The idea is that tracing them will lead cops to the distributors. But one civil rights lawyer is concerned some of those involved might be underage girls, rather than willing participants.

Rohan Edrisinha reckons the publication of the photos can have negative implications for privacy and civil liberties, and called for a ‘careful, measured response’ to pornography on the internet from authorities.
