‘Roaches are forever’

A zoo in New York gets the prize for best Valentine’s Day stunt, by giving misty-eyed lovers the opportunity to name a cockroach after their partners to mark the big day.

The Bronx Zoo has got 58,000 giant Madagascar hissing roaches on display and is asking a cool $10 in donations for naming privileges, reports the BBC.

‘Flowers wilt. Chocolates melt. Roaches are forever,’ was the zoo’s tongue in cheek message.

Zoo spokesman John Calvelli claimed 1,000 names had been snapped up on the first day of the promotion.

The Wildlife Conservation Society that runs the zoo suggested this geeky reason for the prezzie: ‘Maybe it's in recognition of your one and only's virility, or strength in the face of high radiation,’ it said.

The brown, lustrously coloured cockroaches grow up to 3 inches in length. In courtship rituals, males hiss at the female bugs.
