Taboos ain’t what they were

Looking at the programme for the Barbican’s Seduced season – an “exploration of sex in art through the ages” – here’s an item that caught our eye.

In a talk entitled Shock of the Now, co-curator Joanna Bernstein discusses the changing taboos and standards in 20th-century art.

Expect to explore such crucial questions as: How do we decide what’s acceptable in art? What’s the difference between erotica and pornography? What’s tasteful and what’s filth? And what exactly is that donkey doing?

The free talk takes place on 8 November and comes with a warning: “contains work of a sexually explicit nature”. We wouldn’t expect anything less.
