It takes two ladies

A Pakistani man in a dilemma over whether to embark on an arranged or a love marriage came up with a unique solution, marrying both women within the space of 24 hours.

At first Azhar Haidri refused to marry 28-year-old Humaira Qasim, the woman his family had earmarked for him since childhood, due to his love for 21-year-old Rumana Aslam.

His decision was threatening to cause bedlam in the family until the magnanimous compromise – he’d marry both women in weddings 24 hours apart in the city of Multan, central Pakistan.

'I gave this offer that I will marry both of them,' said Mr Haidri, 23. 'Both the girls agreed. It is very rare that two women are happily agreeing to marry one man.'

Pakistani men who take more than one wife usually do so after a period of years, and always with the ‘approval’ of the first wife.

The two women told journalists that they plan to live together as sisters and friends: ‘I am happy that we both love the same man’ said Ms Aslam.

The double wedding was the toast of the Pakistani media, reports the BBC, with live coverage shown on TV channels.
