Getting lippy

Since time immemorial we’ve wondered about the curious habit of lip-painting. But now new research shows why for women it’s best to flout your pout – the lips are the apparently the most attractive part of the female body.

Boffins at Manchester University found that in the ten seconds after first meeting a woman, most men will spend half their time gazing at her mouth.

More so if she’s applied lipstick, with a dash of pink lippy holding a man’s attention for 6.7 seconds and red fully fixating him for a whole 7.3 seconds.

The study involved monitoring the movements of men when presented with images of different women.

Research leader Dr Geoff Beattie said: ‘This study proves that lips represent one of the most sensual aspects of a woman’s body and play a critical role in human sexual attraction.

‘For centuries, women have painted their lips red to enhance their appeal, with this practice dating back as far as the Ancient Egyptians who commonly used red lipstick and rouge to enhance their attractiveness.

‘The research suggests that red lips and perceived attractiveness are still inextricably linked, with red lipstick proving to be the most powerful attractor and significantly increasing visual fixation.’
