Sleight of mind

Famous for his ability to slip behind the mind's eye of the general public to manipulate and re-direct the conscious and unconscious actions of willing or unwilling volunteers, Derren Brown is our contemporary Svengali, who persuades those sceptical in the mystic forces with seemingly simple magic tricks and ways of redirecting our attention. However, when it came to accepting his homosexuality, Derren was himself the willing volunteer of a Christian movement that seeks to cure people of being gay, Pinknews tells us.

The evangelical group, named 'Living Waters', was joined by Brown in 2008 and although he had every intention of confronting his own same-sex orientation, he still held back in fully accepting the teachings of the group that might cure his feelings.

''Friends of mine were in it so I was kind of aware of it. I just felt it was misguided.''

On the process itself of curing homosexuality, Brown adds: 'It was more interesting than, ‘Read your Bible and all your problems will go away.’ It had a bit of depth and psychology to it, but it was just based on a false premise.''

''When I got to my early 30s I realised that it [being gay] wasn’t going to go away.''

Now blessed with a partner and further tv opportunities to confound and amaze non-believers in the field of street-wizardry, Brown has fully accepted who he is.
