Erotic solution best for ‘neurotic’ marriages

What it actually means to be ‘neurotic’ we don’t know but such people apparently have a hard time of it when it comes to tying the knot. Not the ceremony of course, but the actual business of actually sustaining a happy marriage.

Fortunately - yes, you’ve guessed it - help is at hand. Having pored over the problem, scientificos have come up with one sure-fire thing guaranteed to scratch the nervous itch: sex, and lots of it.

Sify.com explains: ‘Neuroticism is the tendency to experience negative emotion, and people who are high in it get upset and irritated easily, change their mood often, and worry frequently.’ Ah, thanks for that. Such folk, according to Psychology Today, are more prone to ‘depression, anxiety, self-consciousness and hypochondria.’

Michelle Russell and James McNulty of the University of Tennessee write that, ‘High levels of neuroticism are more strongly associated with bad marital outcomes than any other personality factor.’ However, there is a silver lining to that cloud – it turns out neurotic people who have a lot of sex with their partners are just as happy as calmer types.

Sex as a form of release or a way of smoothing over a disagreement makes a degree of sense. Though we reckon if you’re unhappy in your relationship you generally have less sex, and if you’re happy you have more. Hmm.
