Berlusconi: ’It’s better to like beautiful girls than be gay.’

Underfire Silvio Berlusconi yesterday lashed out at the gay community after calls for him to resign over allegations in his private life.

Over the past couple of days it has emerged that the Italian Prime Minister gave money and jewellery to a 17-year-old belly dancer who stayed at his house. He’s also suspected of unlawfully intervening when Ruby, now 18, was charged with theft.

Speaking in Milan yesterday, he was characteristically defiant, claiming: ‘As always, I work without interruption and if occasionally I look a beautiful girl in the face, it’s better to like beautiful girls than be gay.’

The bizarre attack was roundly condemned by gay rights group.

Hollywood actress Julianne Moore, speaking at the Rome Film Festival at the opening of her film The Kids Are All Right about a lesbian couple raising a family, criticised his remarks, saying ‘I think it’s unfortunate, archaic and idiotic.’
