An affair of the genes

Boffins have revealed in a new study that to cheat on your partner is really a genetic trait.

Research carried out at State University of New York the same gene that has been held responsible for gambling and alcohol abuse might have a hand in sexual behaviour as well.

Chief researcher Justin Garcia explained that the internal desire for chemical dopamine could hold the key. He said: ‘What we found was that individuals with a certain variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to have a history of uncommitted sex, including one-night stands and acts of infidelity. The motivation seems to stem from a system of pleasure and reward, which is where the release of dopamine comes in. In cases of uncommitted sex, the risks are high, the rewards substantial and the motivation variable – all elements that ensure a dopamine rush.’

So every love rat is really just a dopamine fiend? We think you’d be a dope yourself to believe it.
