2022 World Cup won’t Qatar for gay fans

It’s a long time in the future, so perhaps there’s time for Qatar to rethink its oppressive laws on homosexuality before the 2022 World Cup.

The tiny country currently punishes homosexuality with up to five years in prison or lashes. Gay football groups have said that gay fans would be unable to travel to the Qatar for the games because of the draconian laws.

Perhaps there’s time, too, for Fifa’s sappy president, Sepp Blatter, to be succeeded by someone with more enlightened views. The FIFA president was speaking in Johannesburg at a post-2010 World Cup legacy project launch when he made his most recent ballsup.

Asked about gay football fans visiting Qatar, he is said to have quipped: ‘I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities.’

He quickly added: ‘We are definitely living in a world of freedom and I’m sure when the World Cup will be in Qatar in 2022, there will be no problems.’

If you say so Sepp.
